George Payne, son of John and Sarah Payne, is a senior at Brentwood Academy and a member of the Varsity Cross Country Team.
Of the highlights this season, Payne said that winning the fifth State Championship in a row has been the standout. “We had the fastest average across all divisions,” he said.
He started running after being inspired by his brother and father—both are runners.
When asked what inspires him to train and compete he said, “The goal is to beat my oldest brother’s times from high school.” He added that the closeness that the team has and being able to do well for them has kept him moving forward.
One of his biggest role models is his older brother, John Thomas. “He is currently a senior at UTC (The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and he runs for them,” he said. “He is a lot of fun to hang out with.”
Outside of running, he enjoys watching movies, drawing, and setting up and looking at lights during Christmastime.
After graduating from BA, he plans to continue his running career in college, although he is currently undecided as to where he will go. He plans to study Civil Engineering. After that, he would like to pursue a degree in Architecture or Landscape Architecture.
