Diego Spielmann, son of Rodolfo Spielmann and Maria Miguel, is a freshman at Brentwood High School and this week’s Kerr & Co. Realty Athlete of the Week.
He is a member of the Swim Team. This season, he swam a 5:02 in the 500 freestyle and a 1:52 in the 200 freestyle.
Spielmann said he was in search of a sport to try when he moved to Brentwood and decided to pursue swimming with his sister. He said he and his sister fell in love with it immediately.
When asked what inspires him to train and compete he said, “The competition around me is always improving, so as they get better, I need to improve myself, too.”
BHS Swim Coach Brenda Vroon said of Spielmann, “Diego Spielmann is a freshman who was a welcomed addition to the Aquabruins. He competed in the 200 and 500 freestyle and was the only male BHS freshman who qualified for the 2019 TISCA State Swim Championships, which is an awesome accomplishment. We are excited about Diego’s future as an Aquabruin.”
One of his biggest role models is professional soccer player Alexis Sánchez. He said of Sanchez, “Growing up, he didn’t have much and now he is one of the greatest soccer players in the world.” He added, “… we are both from Chile… his influence has empowered me.”
Outside of swim, he said he enjoys eating, sleeping and playing basketball.
As far as his future after BHS, he said he would like to become a Division I athlete and major in Computer Science.
