Yi Qu, daughter of Xianghu and Lily Qu, is a senior at Brentwood High School and this week’s Kerr & Co. Realty Athlete of the Week.
She is a member of the Girls Tennis Team and competes in singles and doubles. The team is currently third in the state for the graduating class of 2019 and are three-time State champions for AAA Girls.
Qu credits her father for her start in the sport.
“My dad has been playing tennis my whole life,” she said. “When I was little, he got me started by just hitting the ball around with me.”
She said that around sixth grade, she recalls joining the middle school tennis team and really started to get serious about the sport. “I’ve been practicing and competing ever since,” she said.
When asked what inspires her to continue training and competing she said, “I really love the fact that tennis is a lifelong sport. It gives me a lot of hope toward the future, and all the people I will meet and the great memories I will make while playing tennis.”
BHS Tennis Coach Walter Robison said of Qu, “Yi Qu is tenacious. She plays with grit, but tempers that with intelligence. She has been an integral part of the BHS tennis family for four years. She will surely enjoy success as she moves on to Columbia University in NYC.”
Qu said her father, Xianghu, is her biggest role model. “He is compassionate, diligent, and reliable,” she said. “He’s really inspired me to work hard and to push myself both academically and athletically these past four years.”
Qu describes herself as hardworking, creative and empathetic. When she’s not on the court, she enjoys creating art, reading, writing, listening to music and biking.
After graduating from BHS this spring, she will attend Columbia University. She hopes to major in Engineering and minor in English Literature.
