Dodger Vest is a senior at Brentwood High School and this week’s Kerr & Co. Realty Athlete of the Week.
He is a member of the Varsity Track & Field Team. This season, Vest qualified for State in the decathlon and broke 50 seconds in a 4×400 relay.
Vest said he owes his start in the sport to football, which provided the connection to the current Track & Field coach, Gary Kinder. Kinder encouraged him to try out.
When asked what inspires him to continue training and competing he said, “Track is a sport based purely on competition, so just wanting myself to improve and perform at a high level.” He also mentioned his teammate, Tony Sells. “He’s a good teammate and motivates me to get better,” Vest said.
Of his role models, Vest said Kinder is one of the most influential. “He pushes me to limits even I didn’t know I could reach,” he said. “He has taught me so much more than just track.”
BHS Track & Field’s Coach Brock said of Vest, “Dodger has been a huge part of the track and field program at Brentwood High School. This season, he has competed in the decathlon, pole vault, triple jump, long jump, 300 hurdles, 110 hurdles, and multiple relay events. Dodger has an infectious personality, trains with a high intensity, and leads with a competitive spirit. I am honored to have coached this young man.”
Vest describes himself as disciplined, hardworking and genuine. Outside of competing on the track, he likes playing golf, spending time with friends and playing video games.
In the fall, he will attend The University of Tennessee- Knoxville.
