Kevin Vanderkolk, son of Kevin and Colleen Vanderkolk, is a sophomore at Brentwood High School and a member of the Varsity Cross Country team.
This season, he said that his biggest highlights were cutting time and running a PR of 17:23 and watching the team improve with each meet.
Vanderkolk’s twin sister, Kaitlyn, also runs and is the driving force behind his introduction to the sport.
“My twin sister Kaitlyn runs for the girls BHS team,” he said. “I went running with her this summer and she encouraged me to join the team.”
When asked what inspires him to continue training and competing he said, “Getting faster each week and positive support from our coaches.” He added, “Training with my sister Kaitlyn has been a huge motivator.”
One of his biggest role models is one of the BHS Boys Cross Country coaches, Coach Duncan. “He is fast and I want to be fast!”
BHS Boys Cross Country Coach Rob Pautienus said of Vanderkolk, “Kevin works hard in practice and gives 100 percent in races. As a result, his improvement over the course of the season has been remarkable. Just as important, Kevin is always positive, encouraging and a good teammate.”
After graduating from BHS in a couple of years, he plans to pursue a career in music as a songwriter, artist and producer.
