Jordyn Johnson, daughter of George and Tamara Johnson, is a junior at Ravenwood High School and this week’s Kerr & Co. Realty Athlete of the Week.
She is a member of the Varsity Track & Field Team and competes in sprints and the high jump. This year, her first year competing in the high jump, Johnson placed first. She is also proud of her placement on the 4×400 team, where she has come in first place almost every race.
Johnson said she started running at the age of seven with one of her cousins. Since then, she said, she has fallen in love with the sport completely.
When asked what inspires her to continue training and competing she said, “Knowing there’s a chance someone will be faster than me drives me to want to [be] faster than them.”
Her biggest role model is her cousin, Dynesty. “We both started [running] back together when we were kids and I was always enamored with her determination and discipline on and off the track.”
Track & Field Coach Pete Mueller said of Johnson:
Jordyn is generally pretty quiet, but she unleashed the fury at last week’s Section 3 South Sub Sectional Championship meet. First, she matched her personal record in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet. Then, on Saturday, she helped the 4×400-meter relay team pull away from Brentwood with a smoking second leg. She and her teammates will be at it again this Thursday and Friday as they compete for a berth in the State meet.
Johnson describes herself as unique, caring, strong-minded and animated. When she’s not competing or training, she enjoys dancing and drawing.
After graduating from RHS, she is hoping to attend Vanderbilt University to study to become an obstetrician.
