Brentwood High School boys captured the 2016 TSSAA Class AAA State Boy’s Cross Country Championship, and Ravenwood Girls won the same classification on Saturday at the Steeplechase Cross Country Course at Percy Warner Park.
There were four Bruin boys among the top 10 finishers in the 5K cross country race.
This was the fifth State Championship in 6 years for the Brentwood boys team.
Wilson Central was second and Oak Ridge was third.
The Brentwood High School girls team came in fourth, behind Ravenwood, Dobyns-Bennett and Houston.
Ravenwood’s Annika Sleenhof led her team to the finish line, coming in second with a time of 17:50.40, just 18 seconds behind the first-place finisher, Sasha Neglia of Dobyns-Bennett, in Kingsport.
The Brentwood boys broke the all-time Steeplechase course record and State Championship meet record with a five-runner average of 15:46.
The Brentwood boys now own the 5 fastest Steeplechase team averages ever, as well as 7 of the top 8 team averages of all-time on the Steeplechase course (all recorded in the past 5 years).
Brodey Hasty also broke the individual state meet and Steeplechase course record with a 15:09, followed closely by Taylor Vroon’s 15:10.71 — which just missed the old course record of 15:10.57 by 14/100ths of a second, set by Foot Locker All-American, Aaron Templeton.
This team placed 1-2-5-6-16 for 29 points, which means that they outscored all 23 other teams put together.
No one has ever come close to doing that in the AAA classification and the Bruins just missed putting all five scorers on the All-State podium, with Rayaan Bashir’s excellent 16th place anchor finish.
1st- Brodey Hasty
2nd- Taylor Vroon
16th- Rayaan Bashir
