Brentwood High students win Overall School Sweepstakes, individual awards at state Latin convention

Brentwood High School had its strongest showing ever at the state Latin convention in Chattanooga this past weekend, coming home with as the First Place team in the Overall School Sweepstakes, first place in the Toga Relay, 2nd Place in the Spirit Contest, and 2nd place in the Certamen (Quiz Bowl).

BHS Latin teacher Diana Tomayko called the students “stellar.”

Team members also brought home a number of individual and small-group awards:

1st  Place, Vocal Performance (Hursha Kondee, Soundharya Ramanathan, Shilpa Chowbey, Walker Woods – ask to hear their rendition of Bastille’s “Pompeii” sung entirely in Latin!)

1st  Place, Pen and Ink – Sophia Chang (“Dots and Dictators”)

1st  Place, Mixed Media – Jessie Yang

1st  Place, Dramatic Latin: Advanced Poetry – Tyler Myers

2nd Place, Roman Life – Tyler Myers

2nd Place, Greek History – Tyler Myers

2nd Place, Roman History – Tyler Myers

2nd Place, Dramatic Latin: Advanced Prose – Hursha Kondee

2nd Place, Classical Art – Pierce Dudek

3rd Place, Dramatic Latin: Advanced Poetry – Sophia Chang

3rd Place, English Oratory – Sophia Chang

3rd Place, Derivatives – Emily Van Schaack
