Brentwood offering cash prizes for Arbor Day posters, essays, and Instagram photos

The City of Brentwood is inviting Brentwood students and residents of all ages to participate in three contests with cash prizes leading up to its 29th Annual Arbor Day Celebration in April.

Writing, poster, and photography contests will be part of the Arbor Day Celebration. In partnership of the City of Brentwood’s 50th Birthday Celebration throughout the year, the 2019 theme for all contests is Brentwood Roots: Celebrating 50 Years of Trees.

City Commissioner and Tree Board Member, Betsy Crossley explains that this year’s theme combines creativity and celebration.

“Trees create a legacy when we plant them, so the Tree Board decided to combine the idea of roots and history into our theme.  We felt it was the perfect way to combine the celebration of Arbor Day with Brentwood’s 50th Birthday,” Crossley said.

The poster contest is open to sixth grade students at Brentwood, Sunset, and Woodland Middle Schools and to third grade students at Crockett, Edmondson, Jordan, Kenrose, Scales, Sunset, and Lipscomb Elementary. Submitted poster entries must be 11×17 in size and artists can use any art medium such as natural materials, photos, letters, pen and ink, oils, or watercolors.  The deadline to submit posters is February 28, 2019.

High school students from Environmental and English classes at Brentwood, Ravenwood High, and Brentwood Academy are invited to write a 500 word or less essay about “Brentwood Roots: Celebrating 50 Years of Trees.”  The deadline for the writing contest is March 15, 2019

New for 2019 is an Instagram photo contest which is open to any Brentwood resident of any age.  All photos must be submitted by posting on Instagram with the hashtag:  #BrentwoodTN50trees. Submitted photographs can be color or black and white. Submissions must be posted by March 15 for consideration. For more specific rules for each contest, please visit our website.”We are so excited to add the new Instagram photo contest this year,” said Tree Board Chairwoman Lynn Tucker.   “Our Tree Board members look forward to judging these as well as the many wonderful poster and writing submissions we receive each year,” Tucker added.

The Tree Board has the support of community partners Bartlett Tree, Bayer, F&M Bank, Kemp Dental, and The Meritant Group, which are making the cash prizes available for first-, second- and third-place entries.

Contest winners will be announced at the Arbor Day Celebration held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library, and will also be posted on the City of Brentwood website on the Tree Board page following the Contest. Poster and written entries will be returned to applicants during the first week of April.
