City may hire architect for new Mallory-area park

Brentwood city commissioners will vote Monday on whether to execute a contract with a landscape architect firm to develop a master plan for the soon-to-be park near Mallory Park.

Brentwood city commissioners will vote Monday on whether to execute a contract with a landscape architect firm to develop a master plan for the soon-to-be park near Mallory Park.

The south Brentwood property is located between the CSX railroad on the west, Interstate 65 and General MacArthur Dr. on the east, and Wikle Road West to the south.

Unofficially referred to as “Flagpole Park,” the land was dedicated to the city as a part of Mallory Park’s Phase 2 approval and features 24 acres divided into two tracts.

The southern tract is approximately 8.7 acres and will have vehicle access through Mallory Park, parking lots and restrooms. It will be used mainly for unlighted athletic events.

The larger, northern tract roughly 15 acres will be a passive park with walking trails, picnic tables and a playground much like Owl Creek Park on Concord Rd., City Manager Kirk Bednar said.

The city wants to hire Hodgson Douglas LLC at a cost of $18,600. City staff believe the firm is the most qualified because of their familiarity with the property. It was the landscape architect for the Mallory Park site.

The firm will hold a public meeting as a part of the initial planning process, as well as smaller meeting with nearby neighborhoods to gather resident input.

Bednar said the city discovered it owned right-of-way easement to allow a 20-foot wide access path from General MacArthur Dr. to the northern track.

Planning and Codes Director Jeff Dobson said both neighbors abutting the easement are agreeable to the path.

Bednar said if approved, master planning will begin in the fall of 2014. If that master plan is passed by the Park Board and City Commission, work is expected to begin in the summer of 2015.
