Avenida Partners, the developer, took over the five-acre site of WAKM radio, and AM station that had been broadcasing with 5,000 watts of power since 1950.

Now the small building that housed WAKM has been razed, the tower was disassembled, and the studios were moved to 1333 West Main Street.

Avenida plans to build 142 apartments on the site, which abuts The Villages of Morningside, a community developed in the 1990s for both senior independent living and assisted living.

In addition to the radio station, the site once was home to an airstrip and hangars. // MARK COOK

Avenida Cool Springs will serve active seniors 55 and over only, in what they describe as a service-enriched lifestyle community with resort-style amenities. Avenida Cool Springs will be up to three stories, and include a pool in a courtyard.Portions of the development are expected to be move-in ready early in 2019.
