Franklin resident’s iPhone shot ends up on billboards all over the world

Mitchell Hollander of Franklin took an iPhone 6S photo of his girlfriend at Marathon Music Works last year, and the photo is now on billboards all over the world.

Franklin resident Mitchell Hollander took an iPhone 6S photo of his girlfriend at Marathon Music Works in Nashville last year, and the photo is now blown up on billboards all over the world.

Apple did a campaign last year called “Shot on iPhone 6,” showcasing the upgrades and improvements to the iPhone’s camera features. Hollander saw some of the billboards and used the social network Instagram to put himself out there as a potential candidate.

“When I got my hands on the new iPhone 6S I started hashtagging all the photos I took with the tag #ShotOniPhone6s and then posted them on my Instagram,” he said. “I was hoping that it would get Apple’s attention and they would select a photo for the next campaign.”

Several months after the iPhone 6S came out and after posting numerous photos, Hollander got an email saying that someone at Apple wanted to use a few of his pictures.

“After sending the photos and waiting a few months, I was emailed while I was at work that one of the photos had been selected to be on Apple’s ‘Shot On iPhone 6S’ campaign and that it would be on billboards and in print publications all over the world,” he said. “I was so excited, shocked and thrilled that I had to run out of my office and scream and then immediately call Tobias and my family.”

Tobias Ferrell is Hollander’s girlfriend, and the subject of the photo that was chosen. Hollander has been studying photography for about two years, just doing it as a hobby for now while he works as a software engineer for a Nashville security network. The 22-year-old is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana and ever since moving to Nashville he’s continued to make friends who are into photography and Instagram.

“All my friends and family have inspired me and helped me develop my photography over the last two years living in Nashville,” he said. “I really couldn’t have done it without them. I especially couldn’t have done it without the subject of the photo, my sweetheart of a girlfriend Tobias.”

The photo can be seen on billboards all over the world, including in Charlotte, Los Angeles, Milan, Istanbul, Sydney, Seoul, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur.

“I originally thought it was only going to be in these locations,” he said. “But people keep sending me photos of it in locations that were not on the list at all. So I believe the billboards are just randomly scattered all over the world, which is totally fine by Tobias and me.”

The two plan to take a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina to see the billboard there, but haven’t found the right date yet. In addition to iPhone, Hollander uses a Sony A7II and a Fujifilm x100T.
