Franklin skater critically injured after collision with minivan in downtown Nashville

METRO NASHVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Metro Nashville Police Department has identified Norman Stevenson, 23, of Franklin as the skateboarder critically injured in a collision Friday night in Nashville. Police say he is in critical condition and being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police say Stevenson was riding a skateboard south on 4th Avenue at 7:30 p.m. Friday when he collided with a Toyota Sienna minivan at the intersection of Broadway and 4th Avenue. The minivan was stopped in the intersection waiting for heavy congestion to clear in preparation to turn left onto Broadway from 4th Avenue South.

The driver has been identified has Ashraf Khalil, 47, of Mt. Juliet.

Police say the contributing factor to the collision was Stevenson’s failure to obey a traffic control device which did not give him clearance to enter the intersection.  Furthermore, police say state law prohibits play vehicles (i.e. roller skates, coasters and similar items) from any portion of a highway or roadway within a city or town.
