Franklin’s Matt Gaca claims Player of the Week honors

BY CORY WOODROOF

So, we had a shift in the 6A Region 6 playoff race this past weekend, and it’s in large part to our Home Page Player of the Week.

Franklin coach Donnie Webb says that the Rebels’ offense is channeled through senior running back Matt Gaca, and it’s easy to see why.

Gaca has had a strong season, helping power Franklin to a 4-3 record and putting them in the driver’s seat for the final spot in the 4-position region playoff standings.

He ran for 210 yards and two touchdowns in Franklin’s victory over rival Centennial, keeping the Battle of Franklin with the namesake school. He had 126 of those yards by half.

Gaca’s been the offensive star for Franklin to this point, and outside of their stout defense, is part of the reason the Rebels can look to the postseason. On the legs of Gaca is not a bad way for an offense to go.

He’s our Home Page Player of the Week.

Oh, and by our research, he’s not got colleges looking at him like they should.

Let the numbers and the tape tell the story here. He’s more than deserving of a post-high school chance.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Independence QB Ethan Cash had a monstrous night in the Eagles’ upset of Brentwood and got close to getting this honor, as did WRs T.J. Sheffield and Isaiah Collier.

Cash threw for 466 yards and 5 touchdowns against a good Bruins defense, with Sheffield taking 286 yards and 3 of those touchdowns, and Collier had 170 yards in the air and 2 TDs. He also had 42 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Brentwood QB Cade Granzow threw for 220 yards and 4 touchdowns in the loss, with WR Walker Merrill catching three of those scores and 50 yards.

Ravenwood QB Brian Garcia had 5 touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) in the team’s Homecoming win over Dickson C0. WRs Anthony Holmes and Andrew Mason split the four receiving scores between themselves.

Summit RB Tre Hunter rushed for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Spartans’ win over Franklin Co.

Brentwood Academy QB Wade Williams had two touchdowns scored with his arm and two scored with his legs in the Eagles’ win over Baylor. RB Tomario Pleasant had 159 yards of offense, and RB Jordan James had 118 yards on the ground and a score.

CPA RB Sam West had 136 yards and a touchdown in the Lions’ win over Lipscomb Academy. RB Kane Patterson helped out with 104 yards and 2 touchdowns, as did RB Andrew Madden with 87 yards and 2 touchdowns.
