Friends of the Brentwood Library book sale to feature large vinyl collection

Brentwood book lovers have cause for excitement as the first quarterly Friends of the Brentwood Library book sale fast approaches.

The book sale will begin Friday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. and will last all weekend.

Friends of the Library publicity chair Heidi Adams said the September book sale featured almost 20,000 items. Most of the book sales, she added, are about that size.

Along with books, Adams said the January sale will have a “bigger-selection-than-usual” collection of vinyl records, as well as DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks.

Most items for sale were either donated or pulled from library circulation, Adams said, and they include fiction, non-fiction, children’s, teens, classics, paperbacks, reference books, cookbooks, coffee table books and more.

The sale is open to the public, but the Friends of the Brentwood Library are offering Friends members a special new perk: early access. Members will get to beat the crowd and begin shopping at 9 a.m. on Friday, an hour before the sale opens to the public.

Friends Memberships can be purchased at the library circulation desk or on the spot at the book sale and begin at $20.

Adams also mentioned the benefit the Friends book sale poses to teachers.

“It’s such a good resource for teachers who end up spending their own money and [for whom] there are limited budgets,” Adams said. “It’s such a good place to get children’s books, especially for the younger teachers in the elementary classrooms.”

The book sale is a fundraiser and all money raised will go to support the library for things like additional books, materials and technology. It also helps pay for special equipment, staff development, and library programs.

“People should invest in the library because it is the heart of our community,” Adams said. “It so much more than just books. There are community programs, there are study sessions for high school and middle school exams, there are 3D printers…there’s something for everybody there.”

Price points for the book sale are low and range from $0.50 to $3.00, although some vintage items or DVDs may be priced slightly higher. On Sunday, everything left will be half price.

Book sale hours are Friday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 20 from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For those who can’t make the book sale, Adams says the Friends have an online book sale that goes on all year long. It’s located on the Friends Amazon page, and much like the physical sale, items are donations or library books pulled from circulation.

The John P. Holt Brentwood Library is located at 8109 Concord Road in Brentwood.
