Heat wave and thunderstorms today, throughout week, before first day of summer

Middle Tennesseans can expect an oppressive mix of heat and humidity and thunderstorms later this afternoon, before a slight drop in temperature later in the week.

A hazardous weather report has been issued by the National Weather Service for high heat index values, which will peak between 97 and 102 degrees today.

The report also said thunderstorms are expected this afternoon, possibly with high winds and hail.

Meteorologists urge Middle Tennesseans to stay indoors to avoid the inclement weather, if possible.

The high heat and storms will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with a slight drop off and temperature of 88 degrees on Thursday, the official first day of summer.

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 101. Calm wind becoming west southwest around 5 mph in the morning.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 99. Calm wind becoming west northwest around 5 mph in the morning.

Wednesday
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. West wind 5 to 10 mph.
