Income tax prep volunteers will be available Jan. 30-Apr. 15

Free tax return preparation and filing for families earning low to moderate incomes begins Jan. 30 through United Way of Williamson County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Families and individuals making $62,000 or less are eligible.

Last year, VITA volunteers helped 984 families with their taxes, resulting in $898,647 in total federal refunds coming back to Williamson County families, according to figures from the United Way of Williamson County.

IRS-certified volunteers staff four sites in the county: the Fairview Public Library, Fifty Forward College Grove, GraceWorks Ministries and the Williamson County Public Library. The volunteers assist with the qualification process and determine if individuals qualify for credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and the Credit for the Elderly.

Last year, $344,943 in Earned Income Tax Credit refunds were returned to Williamson County residents.

In addition to free tax preparation assistance, the sites offer free electronic filing, which allows refunds to be directly deposited into a person’s bank account.

Qualified families who are unable or do not wish to go to one of the VITA sites can also file their income taxes for free online by visiting DoMyTaxes.org. Free tax filing software is provided by H&R Block.
