Ken Travis named Brentwood vice mayor, Board of Commissioners fails to vote in mayor with majority

By RACHAEL LONG

The Brentwood Board of Commissioners voted Monday night to elect Commissioner Ken Travis as its new vice mayor. The board could not come to a decision-making vote on the election of its next mayor.

Commissioners took two initial rounds of voting which did not yield the required four-vote majority of one mayoral candidate. At that point, Commissioner Anne Dunn suggested the commissioners defer the election of mayor to the end of the meeting to allow time for reflection. All seven commissioners voted to defer the motion to the conclusion of the meeting.

At the City Commission informational meeting on Thursday, City Manager Kirk Bednar took down a list of those who wanted to be considered for the roles of mayor and vice mayor.

For the mayoral ballot, commissioners Rhea Little, Mark Gorman and Regina Smithson listed their names. Commissioner Ken Travis requested to be listed on the ballot for vice mayor and was elected at the regular place in the meeting.

Travis, as the sole candidate for vice mayor, was unanimously elected at the start of the meeting.

By the conclusion of the meeting, not much had changed among commissioners for the mayoral vote. After seven total rounds of voting and some frustration, the board voted to defer the election of mayor to the first meeting in June.
