It has been an exciting five years for Alex Guppy, the owner of the new Mathnasium of Brentwood.

In 2014 he was on a camping trip in Chattanooga when he applied for a director position at the local Mathnasium. “The job was just perfect for me. I competed in mathematics throughout all of high school and college, and all of my jobs since I was fifteen years old have involved working with kids.” The work obviously suited Alex as the center began to flourish under his leadership. The center had 35 students when he began, but since then he has opened a second center in Chattanooga and currently serves 230 students.

“For me, the turning point was when I realized myself how powerful of a tool Mathnasium is not only for students who are trying to catch up, but for students who are interested in exploring their full potential. We have fifth and sixth graders who have been with us for years now and they love it. They can also crush an Algebra 2 Test that would leave many 11th graders scratching their heads.”

The Mathnasium Method has three key components. First, they assess students to find out exactly where their weaknesses lie. Once assessed, they customize a learning plan around those weaknesses so that kids can learn quickly and efficiently. Lastly, students attend lessons with caring and knowledgeable instructors who teach math in a way that makes sense to them.

For students who are catching up, the Mathnasium Method can make a big difference. “When students are behind in math we often find that just helping them with their homework is not enough. You often find yourself running into roadblocks along the way as prerequisite skill gaps prevent true understanding. As kids fall further behind, they experience fewer successes in math and are less likely to enjoy it and give it their best effort.” With that being said, Mathnasium is not just for students who are catching up.

“Our enrichment students LOVE Mathnasium! For the kid who is bored in school because they don’t get the challenge they crave, the individualized pace is a huge perk. They can fly as fast and as high as they would like with nerdy instructors who are just as passionate about math as they are!”

Mathnasium of Brentwood is located at 18 Cadillac Drive, Suite 350, Brentwood, TN 37027. It is open Monday-Thursday from 3-7:30 p.m. and Sunday 2-5 p.m. Call (615) 942-2629 or visit www.mathnasium.com/brentwood for more information.
