Now is the time to give your input on the Williamson schools district calendar

By EMILY R. WEST

For those wanting to see school start earlier or later next year, Williamson County Schools will let families have a say.

Presenting three options, the district sent out a survey Tuesday through parents’ Skyward accounts to let them choose an option for the 2017-2018 calendar.

Parents and employees will have until Thursday, Nov. 3 at noon to complete the survey. Nearly 9,000 have already filled out the survey.

I look at what’s the most instructionally sound and how do we get the most days of instructions without interruption,” Superintendent Mike Looney said. “If you have gaps from learning it’s hard to recover from that. We also have to think about what’s best for every child. For those who are abused or homeless – or kids who come from those types of environment – it’s horrid. I worry about the unintended consequences of us planning school calendars around vacations.”

The results will go before the Williamson County School Board at its Nov. 10 work session. The board will vote on a calendar for the 2017-18 school year at its Nov. 21 meeting.

Here are the three options:

Option A

School starts Aug. 11 and ends May 24. Students get:

• a two-day fall break
• a week-long Thanksgiving break
• a two-week winter break between semesters
• a week-long spring after the third quarter

Option B

School starts Aug. 4 and ends May 23. Students will get:

• a week-long fall break after the first quarter
• no Veterans Day off
• a week-long Thanksgiving break
• a two-week winter break between semesters
• a week-long spring break after the third quarter

Option C

School starts after Labor Day on Sept. 5 and ends June 13. Students will get:

• No Veterans Day off
• a three-day Thanksgiving break
• a two-week winter break between semesters
• a week-long spring break after the third quarter
