OBITUARY: Mary Elizabeth Choate Brindley

Mary Elizabeth Choate Brindley, Age 98, died peacefully at home on May 6, 2019.

She was born May 18, 1920, at Minor Hill, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bradford Brindley, who died in 1975, and her parents, Andrew Lee Choate and Emma Clay Wilburn Choate Douglas and a brother, Richard Lee Choate.

Her father and mother owned the Radnor Drug Store and the early Green Hills Pharmacy where Dr. Choate was the pharmacist. She was the granddaughter of Henry Jasper Wilburn and Elizabeth Jane Johnson Wilburn of Scott’s Hill, and Thomas Jefferson Choate and Eliza Jane Morgan Choate of Lawrence County. Mrs. Brindley grew up in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, before the family moved to Nashville, when she was very young. She graduated from Nashville’s Central High School in 1938 and first worked for National Life & Accident Insurance Co. Mrs. Brindley retired after 36 years as Executive Assistant to three Master Mechanics, L&N Railroad, Radnor Yards. After her retirement from L&N in 1985, she traveled extensively with her four grandsons and she enjoyed three “Around the World Cruises.” She played excellent Bridge and Mahjong. She was an avid reader and played the organ for her personal enjoyment. She knitted exquisite Afghans for all of her family and booties and caps for newborns in the nursery at Williamson Medical Center. “GiGi”, as she was called, was the ultimate baseball sports fan and readily conversed about all sports with her grandsons. She was lovingly generous and sacrificed to completely devote her life to her family, the Jo King Church Circle, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Nashville for more than 69 years.

Mrs. Brindley is survived by her two daughters: Betty Jane Brindley (Cook) Chalfant (BG Bertram H., Jr.), and Susan Lynn Brindley (Lott) Burke, both of Brentwood, Tennessee.

Grandchildren: James Bradford Cook of Lake View, Alabama, Jonathan Creighton Cook (Lynn Archer Cook) of Franklin, Tennessee, Clarence Lee Lott, III (Sally Teloh) of Jackson, Mississippi, and Bradford Brindley Lott (Susan Perdue Lott) of Franklin, Tennessee, Lea Chalfant Sullins (Dan Crawford) of Arlington, Texas, and Anna Gene Chalfant O’Neal (Irvine Scott) of Nashville, Tennessee. Great-Grandchildren: Grayson Payne Cook, Jackson Henley Cook, Griffin Bradford Cook of Lake View, Alabama, Carson Lenore Cook, Margaret Emerson Cook, and Sarah Scott Elizabeth Cook of Franklin, Tennessee, Julia Elizabeth Lott, Andrew Lee Lott, Barrett Brindley Lott of Jackson, Mississippi, and Phoebe Elizabeth Lott of Franklin, Tennessee, Dan Crawford Sullins, Jr. and Erich Neil Sullins of Arlington, TX, Ayla Gabriella O’Neal and Cleveland Bates O’Neal of Nashville, TN. Sister-in-law, Catherine Choate and Niece, Judith Choate Rowan (McEwen), great nephews, Josh Rowan and Matthew Rowan. Loving Family Caregivers: Marie Herron, LaTonya Dotson, and Jeffrey Leach.

Visitation with the family will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, May 9, 2019, at Woodbine Funeral Home, HICKORY CHAPEL, 5852 Nolensville Road, and from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Cheek House at First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Road, Nashville, TN. Service will follow in the Cheek House Chapel. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville.
