Sarah C. Bayrd, a popular AP history teacher at Brentwood High School, passed away in 2010.
She continues to make an impact in the lives of students at BHS, though, both in the influence she had on other teachers and in a scholarship that her two children, Beth and Bill, established several years ago in her name.
The $1,000 scholarship is for graduating BHS seniors. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average. They must also be accepted to a post-secondary school in order to receive the scholarship.
There are a number of items that students must submit to apply for the scholarship. These include a completed application form, a high school transcript and a 5-page essay. For the essay, students are asked to pick a news story from the past three months and discuss its place in the larger context of U.S. history.
Applications are due on April 6. They can be submitted by mail to Brentwood High School, Attn: Wendy Hart.
Hart is the Social Studies Department Chair at Brentwood High. In a story about the scholarship last year, Hart remembered Bayrd fondly.
“She ate, lived and breathed history,” she said.
Last year’s scholarship winner was Abigail Ezell.
