Reader Charles Chase is very observant. He writes:
“I understand that Concord Road is supposed to be lowered where the current hill is located slightly east of Edmondson Pike. There is a ‘Big Dig’ currently in progress next to the current road. Is that going to be the path of the new road, or will they also dig up the current road?”

Well Charles, we went right to the source to get your answer. Jackie Hunter with the engineering firm of Smith, Seckman, Reid (SSR)  is serving as Project Manager for the TDOT project.

Hunter explained that the area Charles refers to as the “Big Dig” is being excavated so utilities can be relocated and the new bike/walk path can be put in. And yes, the existing roadway will be lowered also, but not until that portion of Concord Road is closed when school is out.

“This is a major cut (excavation) area,” Hunter explained. “Some excavation will also start in the same area when the weather permits, to aid the efforts to get ready for the closure.”

As for the long-announced closure of Concord between Edmondson Pike and Crockett Road, Hunter said exact dates have not been determined but that he expects the contractor to firm them up soon. The city will be notified and “have input into decisions concerning the closure to ensure we are all on the same page.”

Updates on the Concord Road expansion project are available on the city’s website, click here. Brentwood Home Page will report on the closure dates as soon as they are available.
