Woodworking shop to replace old Jamison Market

The green-roofed roadside building at 1974 Wilson Pike in Franklin, often referred to as the “old Jamison market,” is again changing hands and is destined to become a woodworking shop.

The green-roofed roadside building at 1974 Wilson Pike in Franklin, often referred to as the “old Jamison market,” is again changing hands and is destined to become a woodworking shop.

Officials with the Register of Deeds office said the property is still held by the most recent owners, the Patels. The family would not confirm whether their sale has closed, but Franklin newcomer Michael Phillips said he is buying the property and hung a temporary sign for his new business on Wednesday.

Ansbach Artisans is the name of the private enterprise, which sells hand-crafted hardwood furniture and crafts. Ansbach is a district in Bavaria, Germany.

Phillips, who relocated from Germany with his family six months ago, said he chose the building because of its proximity to his new home.

“I like this region; it has a good school system,” he said.

Though prospective leasers and buyers have come and gone, the commercial building has sat empty since last fall. The most recent tenant operated a “think space” for his medical apparel and sleepwear company out of the building for three months before moving out in September 2014, unable to agree with the owners on a purchasing price.

The building, which opened as a convenience store and market in the 1920s, will now double as both a retail store and Phillips’ workspace.

“I make a little bit of everything; a lot of unique, artistic furniture,” he said. Phillips also indicated he may display the work of other local artists on the retail side of his shop.

Phillips expects the shop to open within two to three months.
